Complete large folio atlas. Original half leather, well worn, spine in six panels with bottom panel detached, top panel starting. All signatures tight. 46 pages of text and 54 lithographed maps and charts, some colored. Finely engraved thematic maps using state-of-the art shading and hatchures to show up to five degrees of change. Includes maps on "Density of Foreign Population", "Colored Population" and "Occupations of the People" to name a few. Plus 10 maps on Physical Features and 7 on so-called Vital Statistics giving "Birth Rates", "Age and Sex of Living Population", "Deaths by Age and Sex". A tour-de-force on the state of our society in 1870. Minor foxing, mainly to endpapers. Maps bright and clean. Printed by Julius Bien for Sheffield Scientific School of Yale College. Marbled end papers and map edges. Gold embossed stamp on cover of New Zealand's General Assembly Library.
