Scene of the great sea battle in 1588 between Calais and Dover. The Spanish Armada with Admiral Medina Sidonia was sent to conquer England in order to punish the country for the support Queen Elisabeth I offered to Holland in the 80-Year War. In the English Channel the British destroyed part of the Armada, while the Dutch captured the fleet of Parma in the Harbor of Dunkirk. The remains of the Armada tried to escape by sailing north around Scotland, but it was caught in heavy storms and perished. Later issue.
