Schenk copied this important double hemisphere map from a map of 1700 by the great French cartographer Guillaume Delisle. On his map, Delisle was one of the first cartographers to correctly extend the length of the Mediterranean and to once again portray California as a peninsula. Among the features still incorrectly mapped are New Guinea linked with Australia and Japan linked to the conjectural "Terre de Yeso". The tracks of major explorations are charted in the oceans. The elegantly engraved title cartouche (uncolored) features female representations of the continents balanced by a ribbon-style banner. Schenk's imprint occupies the cartouche at bottom.
