Two nice maps of Dakota Territory. First is by G.W. & C.B. Colton, Philadelphia, circa 1875-76, 12 x 14.7", hand colored to depict the counties. This shows early surveys in the territory and most of the northern and western counties show no settlement. The Northern Pacific Railroad is completed, but other railroads only serve the eastern part of the territory. Second map is by George Cram, Chicago, circa 1883-84, 12 x 18.5", printed color. There are many more counties organized and several railroads now traverse the region. This pair of maps illustrates the rapid onset of settlement during that decade.
