By the 1490s Paris was the undisputed center of the publication of the greatest medieval "best seller," the Book of Hours. As demand grew, a group of printers developed a "hybrid" method, adapting features of both manuscript and printing. This leaf is from such a book. The vellum sheet is printed on the recto side with Gothic textura type with illuminated capitals in red, blue and gold. The text is surrounded by elaborate scenes which are hand colored, iron engravings. The verso contains a large engraving of a woman studying the bible with an angel overhead, and Adam and Eve in the background. There is no text on the verso.
