RARE and beautiful double hemisphere. The map is based on Joan Blaeu's second world map (1662) following both the cartography and the elegant engraving. The shape of South America, course of the Amazon and the configuration of the East Indies reflect the cartography of the early 1600's. In North America the issue of California is interestingly depicted with incomplete coastlines so that the possibility that it is an island is left open. The coastline above California turns eastward and again leaves possible a Northwest Passage. The known parts of Australia and New Zealand are shown. Across the top are celestial figures seated amid clouds, and below are representations of the four seasons with each allegorical figure seated in an appropriate chariot drawn by animals and birds. Sometimes this map is attributed to Dancker Danckerts, as he is the engraver and his signature is at bottom. However, Shirley attributes the map to Daviszoon.
