Scarce and important map of the ISLAND OF CALIFORNIA and the Southwest. It is a re-issue of de Fer's map of 1705 but on a larger scale and with some notable additions. The island is depicted with an indented northern coast, Rio Madelena and several recently discovered settlements are shown along the R. de S. Thomas in Baja. Numerous place names are now shown in present day Arizona and New Mexico. Below the title is a lengthy early history of the region from the discovery in 1533 by Cortez through 1695 and the discovery of Riviere du Coral. The map is decorated with vignettes of native occupations and entertainment and a scales of miles with birds, a sloth and an armadillo.
