This is the first English edition of Edward Stanford''s Compendium of Geography and Travel adapted and enlarged from the original in German. A detailed work on all aspects of the geography of the United States and Canada not including Mexico. The colored maps are of North America, United States and several of Canada and Newfoundland. It was edited and enlarged by Prof. F.V. Hayden and Prof. A.R.C. Selwyn, former directors of the Geological Surveys in the United States and Canada, respectively. The interesting text filled with wood-cut illustrations and supplemented with numerous large folding maps (most of which are hand-colored). There are regional maps, maps showing the distribution of population or climate, railroad maps, and geological maps. 636pp+index+16 maps. Original pictorial gilt cloth, gilt vignette on spine, lightly rubbed at edges. Contents with light foxing to endpapers, ink signature of a previous owner on the title page, some maps mis-folded (and one with a cello tape repair). Overall very good.
