"Sketch of Part of the March and Wagon Road of Lt. Colonel Cooke from Santa Fe to Pacific Ocean, 1846-7", U.S. War Dept.

This map was important in identifying a viable route through the region that was later included in the Gadsden Purchase. As an adjunct to Stephen Kearny's march of the Army of the West, Cooke was detailed to command a Mormon Battalion. He followed a route, south of the mountains and the Gila River. Cooke's battalion was not a combat unit but was organized as a supply train for the purpose of blazing a wagon road. The map terminates at the Pima Villages on the Gila (near present day Phoenix) where he picked up Kearney's trail. The map is full of interesting details. Ref: Wheat [TMW] 505.
