This attractive promotional piece by the Southern Pacific Railroad company was published in conjunction with the Panama–Pacific International Exposition held in San Francisco. The 96 pages of text were written by A.J. Wells and promote settlement in the state. The author points out in the introduction that his "tone is conservative. This is not a bit of 'boom' literature. It indicates clearly the writer's belief in the great advantages which this Pacific Coast state offers settlers, but keeps in mind at all times the man who 'wants to know,' and who, turning hopefully to this State to find a permanent home, cannot afford to be misled." Text is divided into four sections: New California, The Climate and the Farm, Among the Orchard, and Buying Land and Getting Started. It is profusely illustrated throughout with two single-page maps featuring the lines of the Southern Pacific in California and the western half of the United States. Pictorial paper wrappers by W.H. Bull further promote the state's agriculture-rich lands.
