"[Lot of 2] Nth. America from the Best Authorities [and] North America from the Best Authorities",

A. Nth. America from the Best Authorities, by Thomas Bowen, from A New and Universal Geographical Grammar, published 1772 (8.8 x 7.1"). This small, interesting map of the continent delineates the colonies along the East Coast, with a large Lousiana Territory beyond the Mississippi. Santa Fe, Alamillo, and Casa Grande appear in the territory of New Mexico. The area of present-day Northern California is here called New Albion. There is no defined northwestern coast to the continent, with the area labeled Parts Unknown. The mythical western kingdom of Great Teguaio is also named. Off the coast of Newfoundland, the Great Fishing Bank is identified. The decorative title cartouche depicts an Indigenous figure with a bow and arrow. Published by Evan Jones. A similar map by Bowen with the title An Accurate Map of North America from the Best Authorities appeared in Richard Brookes' General Gazetteer the following year. Reference: McCorkle (18th C. Geography Books) #203 Vol. II-6. Condition: Issued folding with faint toning and minor abrasions to the right of the title cartouche, with a bit of facsimile work to the text of Buttons B.

B. North America from the Best Authorities, by Thomas Tegg, from General Gazetteer or Geographical Dictionary, dated 1823 (9.3 x 7.7"). This attractive small map still shows the United States confined to east of the Mississippi River with the large Louisiana to its west. The Oregan River originates roughly in Nebraska and flows as the River of the West to the Pacific at Puget Sound. Alaska is taking shape with some islands shown at the end of the Aleutian Peninsula. California is labeled New Albion and Quivira and Teguayo takes in most of the West. Condition: Issued folding with light scattered foxing and marginal soiling.
