"[3 Maps In Book] A Description of the Canals and Rail Roads of the United States, Comprehending Notices of All the Works of Internal Improvement Throughout the Several States", Tanner, Henry Schenck

This book, published by Tanner & Disturnell, examines the extent of canals and railroads in the young United States. The text is organized by state and includes three folding maps. Each map depicts the railroads and canals in red and blue hand coloring and are derived from maps in Tanner's Universal Atlas. The maps are:

A. Map of the Canals & Rail Roads of the United States, Reduced from the Large Map of the U.S., (23.0 x 17.5"). Condition: The map is toned where it was attached to the book, has a 3" binding tear, and a few short fold separations. (B+)
B. A New Map of New York with Its Canals, Roads & Distances from Place to Place Along the Stage & Steam-Boat Routes, (12.4 x 10.8"). Condition: A hint of toning and offsetting. (A)
C. A New Map of Pennsylvania..., (12.8 x 10.7"). Condition: A hint of toning and offsetting and a binding tear at left that is confined to the blank margin. (A)

The volume includes two additional plates showing profiles of various canals and a 4-page advertisement listing other works available for sale by Tanner & Disturnell. 272 pp. Hardbound in brown cloth with gilt embossing on front cover and gilt title on spine.

Condition: B+

The maps have contemporary outline color and are issued folding. See description above for additional details on the condition of each map. The plates of canal profiles are lightly toned. The text is clean and bright with light toning just along the edges. The title page has an old library stamp with "Ausgeschieden" (withdrawn). The covers are lightly worn with bumped corners. The spine has an old library sticker at bottom and a chip at top.
