This fine copper engraving depicts the Battle of Koge Bay, widely considered the greatest naval victory in Danish history. The battle took place off the coast of the Danish seaport of Koge on July 1 and 2, 1677, during the Scanian War (1675-79). The navy of Denmark-Norway, under the command of Admiral Niels Juel, triumphed over the Swedish Empire, who suffered 3,000 casualties during the battle. As a result, Denmark-Norway gained control of the Baltic and turned the tide on the naval war.
