"Outlines of Botanical Geography. The Distribution of Plants... [on sheet with] Map of Schouws Phyto-Geographic Regions with the Distribution of Plants...", Johnston, W. & A.K.

This large map is a superb example of thematic mapping with various colors and diagrams used to illustrate the distribution of plants throughout the world. The chart at top provides a graphic display of the type of indigenous vegetation in the major mountain regions of the world. At bottom is a map of the world with the distribution of plants depicted through the use of color based on the classifications by Danish botanist Joakim Frederik Schouw.

Keith Johnson worked in conjunction with German Heinrich Berghaus to produce the Physical Atlas, the first truly comprehensive thematic atlas. The maps from this atlas made a huge impact on cartography in general and specifically on the graphic portrayal of geographical data.
