This lot features the July 17, 1813 edition of The Weekly Register containing the first Declaration of Independence by the province of Texas. In 1812 and 1813 anti-Spanish republicans joined by American adventurers rebelled against the Spanish Empire in Mexico. Early battle victories and the capture of many Texas cities led to this Declaration of Independence of the province of Texas. The rebellion came to an abrupt end in August, 1813 at the Battle of Medina south of San Antonio in what is usually called the bloodiest battle in Texas history. 1,300 of the 1,400 rebels were killed in battle or executed.

The declaration is accompanied by 10 other issues of The Weekly Register describing the events and battles before, during and after the initial attempt at Texan independence: June 6, 1812: March 20, 1813; April 17, 1813; June 12, 1813; August 14, 1813; August 21, 1813; October 2, 1813 (including Supplement); October 9, 1813 (Battle of Medina); October 30, 1813; September 30, 1815. Each of the 10 latter issues in original self-wrappers, never bound and untrimmed.
