A. A New Map of the World Drawn from the Best Authorities, by Thomas Kitchin, circa 1759 (10.4 x 6.0"). This small, charming double-hemisphere world map shows country boundaries and some major rivers, but does not name any cities. The region east of the Mississippi is labeled British Empire. Louisiana Territory is identified, and the present-day American Southwest is New Mexico. Van Diemens Land is connected to the rest of Australia. Fragments of coastline are identified north of the Antarctic Circle: Drakes Land; Terra Australis; and Cape Circumcision discover'd in 1739. The map is adorned with a decorative title cartouche. Condition: Issued folding, now flat, with light soiling. Trimmed at top by the bookbinder with minor loss of the title cartouche. (B+)

B. World from the Best Authorities, by Anonymous, circa 1800 (12.1 x 6.4"). This double hemisphere world map features nice detail. Charleston, Philadelphia, New York City, and Boston are the only cities identified in the United States, which is here confined to the east coast. The land to the west of the Mississippi is labeled Louisiana, with New Mexico even farther west. California is named, as is Drakes Harb. and Nootka Sound. The coastlines of Australia and New Guinea are incomplete. The map is similar to the world map of the same title engraved by B. Baker for Brookes' The General Gazetteer in 1797. Reference: cf. McCorkle (18th C. Geography) #29-1. Condition: Issued folding, now flat, with some minor stains in the margins, not affecting map image. (A)
