Two GLO maps showing the surveying progress in eastern Wisconsin Territory (Iowa) over a 1 year period. The first map shows very limited progress with only a handful of townships surveyed, but the 1838 map shows the region completely surveyed with a cession to its west. Iowa would experience population growth from 43,000 in 1840 (territory) to 193,000 in 1850 (state) and these surveys were the first steps for opening settlement.
