This French map of the United States features interesting territorial configurations in the West. Kansas incorporates present-day Oklahoma, Kansas, and part of Colorado. To its north, Nebraska stretches from the Missouri River to the Rockies. The rest of the West is comprised of the state of California and the territories of Washington, Oregon, Utah, and Nouveau Mexique. Minnesota is not yet a state and spills over into the present-day Dakotas. There is a prominent Grand Desert Americain stretching from the Texas Panhandle to just south of the Platte River. In Utah, Lac Timpanogos ou Utah appears to the south of the Great Salt Lake. The map is supposed to be color-coded to show slave states, but the colorist inaccurately portrays Virginia as a free state.
