A. Stati Uniti dell' America Settentrionale, by G. Civelli, from Atlante Geografico, circa 1854 (15.1 x 11.8"). A scarce Italian produced map of the United States during a time of very interesting territorial borders. Here Minnesota includes most of present day North and South Dakota. Nebraska and Kansas Territories fill the entire plains region with Nebraska extending all the way to the Canadian boundary. Washington and Oregon both extend eastward to the Rocky Mountains. Utah and New Mexico are both shown in their largest configurations, while Indian Territory occupies the panhandle of Texas. No sign yet of Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana or the Dakotas. Several exploration routes are shown, including those of Fremont. Engraved by P. Bezzera. Condition: There are a few faint spots in the image and minor damp stains confined to the bottom blank margin. (B+)

B. United States North America, by G.H. Swanston, circa 1858 (20.6 x 16.3"). Uncommon map with interesting western territories. Dakotah incorporates the territory between Minnesota and the Missouri River. The large Nebraska Territory has its western border in the Rocky Mountains adjoining Washington, Oregon and Utah. Nevada is shown with its eastern border nearly on the shores of the Great Salt Lake, while Utah incorporates most of present-day Colorado with its eastern boundary adjoining Kansas and Nebraska. Arizona is shown in its Confederate Territory form located below New Mexico Territory. The map shows particularly good topographical detail. Condition: Light toning confined to the sheet edges. (A)
