A color-coded map presenting the territorial acquisitions of the United States over time. The original thirteen colonies are numbered and colored in pink, the region to its west which was acquired after the French & Indian War (1763) is highlighted in green, Florida is colored orange (1819) and the vast Louisiana Purchase (1803) and Oregon Territory are shaded in yellow. Each of the states or territories shows its capital and population, while a note below the map indicates that the total population in the United States grew from 3.9 million in 1790 to 9.6 million in 1820.
