This detailed map shows the various routes of Ernest Giles' 1875 exploration from Beltana, South Australia to Perth, Western Australia. Giles' journey was supported by Thomas Elder, who provided camels for the trip west over the desert terrain. The use of camels over horses was critical to their success as the group endured 17 straight days without water until finally discovering a source at Queen Victoria Spring. After a little over six months, the group finally arrived at Perth. In addition to the color-coded routes, the map shows detailed topography, lakes, rivers, desert, settlements, notations, and more.

Dr. Augustus Herman Petermann's Geographische Mittheilungen was the oldest German trade magazine dedicated to geography. First published in 1855, the magazine covered many of the important discoveries of the 19th and 20th century until its end in 1937. Published by Justus Perthes in Gotha.
