A. Isthmus of Panama, by John Tallis, from Illustrated Atlas and Modern History of the World, circa 1850 (13.1 x 9.8"). Lovely map of the region from Nicaragua through Panama, drawn and engraved by J. Rapkin. There are three proposed canals and railways shown; two in Panama, and another in Nicaragua. The map is ornamented with two steel-engraved vignettes: The Fort at Chagres and Gold Seekers on their way over the Cordilleras, designed by H. Warren and engraved by J. Wrightson. Reference: Kapp (MCC-73) #116. Condition: Contemporary outline color with some light scattered foxing and minor toning along the centerfold. (B+)

B. North America, Including Yucatan, Belize, Guatemala, Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and the Southern States of Mexico, by SDUK Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, dated 1853 (15.4 x 12.3"). This very detailed engraving covers Central America from Costa Rica through the majority of Mexico and the southern portion of Texas. The tip of Florida and Cuba are shown at the eastern edge of the Gulf of Mexico. Keyboard-style border. Engraved by J. & C. Walker and published by George Cox. Condition: There are minor spots and marginal toning. (A)
