"Tabula, in Argonautica Victoriae",

This rare miniature map of the Americas was published in Joannis Bisselii, e Societate Jesu, Argonauticon Americanorum, sive, Historiae Periculorum Petri de Victoria, ac Sociorum eius, Libri XV. The book is Jesuit historian Johann Bissel's loose literary adaptation of the chronicles of Spanish adventurer Padre Pedro Gobeo da Victoria (1560-1630). Gobeo da Victoria traveled from Spain to South America, tangled with pirates, shipwrecked, and eventually joined the Jesuit order in Lima, Peru. The nicely engraved map of the New World is derived from Ortelius. It depicts California as a peninsula. Virginia appears to the west of Nova Francia. The map extends to show Japan, the Philippines, New Guinea, the Solomons, and a large part of Terra Australis Incognita.

On watermarked paper with narrow margins, as issued, and a few small chips along the edge of the sheet. There is light soiling, especially concentrated along the bottom edge of the sheet.
