This handsome view of the University of Virginia was engraved by the German publisher, architectural draftsman, and landscape painter Johann Poppel. It centers on the Rotunda on the Lawn with figures in the foreground. Thomas Jefferson designed the Rotunda as the centerpiece of the Academic Village, inspired by the architectural drawings of Andrea Palladio and the Pantheon in Rome. This view appeared in one of the publications of city views issued by Joseph Meyer, a German publisher. These were issued in several forms including The United States Illustrated: In Views of City and Country, with Descriptive and Historical Texts, and The West: or the States of the Mississippi Valley and the Pacific.
