Published in the January 18, 1862 issue of The Illustrated London News, this striking engraving depicts John Augustus Roebling's Niagara Falls Suspension Bridge, the world's first operational railway suspension bridge. The bridge was opened in March 1855 and operated until 1897, when it was replaced by the Steel Arch Bridge, a bridge better suited for the heavier modern trains. It spanned the United States-Canadian border and featured a lower deck for pedestrian and carriage traffic. In the engraving, Niagara Falls can be seen in the distance.
