Celebration of the Canadian's Grand Sacrifice to Quitchi Manitou, Whom They Call Their Great Spirit, by Dr. William Hurd, from Dr. Hurd's Religious Rites & Ceremonies of All Nations, circa 1780 (6.9 x 9.8"). This evocative copper plate engraving shows Canadian natives performing a ceremonial sacrifice and dance to the Quitchi Manitou or the "Great Spirit." It is surrounded by an elaborate decorative border. Condition: There is minor scattered foxing and light soiling that is almost entirely confined to the blank margins.
B. The Ceremony of a Divorce, as Practised by the Natives of Canada, in North America, by Nathaniel Portlock, from Portlock's New Collection of Voyages & Travels, circa 1794 (10.5 x 6.1"). This fascinating engraving depicts a divorce ceremony among Canadian natives. The former couple stands on opposite sides of a fire, while the mother bathes their youngest child in the smoke. Condition: A minor stain just enters into map image at top.
