"[Lot of 2] Karte von der Hudsons Bay [and] Carte de la Baye de Hudson pour Servir a l'Histoire Generale des Voyages", Bellin, Jacques Nicolas

A. Karte von der Hudsons Bay, from Allegmeine Historie der Reisen zu Wasser und zu Lande, dated 1744 (11.2 x 8.3"). This German version of the Bellin map details the bay up to about the 65° N. latitude and names James Bay, Buttons Bay, numerous islands including Mansfeld, Agamasque (Akimiski), Weston, Roteur, and some of Diess ift eine Insel (Southampton), plus numerous rivers feeding into the bay. Forts St. Germain, Rupert, Nieuvesarne, d'York, and Se. Anne are located. It also names many capes and other coastal places including Port Nelson. Dated 1744, but published in 1756 by Arkstee & Merkus. Reference: Kershaw #423. Condition: A dark impression issued folding on watermarked paper with minor offsetting and some light dampstaining along the top sheet edge. (A)

B. Carte de la Baye de Hudson pour Servir a l'Histoire Generale des Voyages, from Prevost's Histoire Generale des Voyages, dated 1757 (12.0 x 8.7"). This is the first state of this handsome chart of the Hudson Bay and Labrador, depicting the mountains and coastal features and including numerous forts. There is a note in French in the far northwest corner of the map explaining that the English had searched for a Northwest Passage in that region, but it did not exist. Embellished with a decorative title cartouche. Reference: Kershaw #459; Portinaro & Knirsch, p. 242; cf. Sellers & Van Ee #304. Condition: Issued folding on watermarked paper with a binding trim and associated tears at right that have been partially closed on verso with tape. There is minor extraneous creasing. (B+)
