A rare, complete and fine atlas with all pages and maps, title page and frontispiece present. The frontispiece features Atlas and figures representing the four continents, with the Americas sitting on a crocodile. The frontispiece and the majority of the maps are engraved by Jacob Harrewyn. The four-page description of America is amended by a 12-line manuscript annotation in Latin. The last few pages are a description of the seven wonders of the world. Of particular note are the maps of the world and Americas.

The untitled double-hemisphere world map shows the island of California with a completely blank Northwest coast of North America, and a large lake in central United States. In the southern hemisphere, Australia and New Zealand are partially mapped, and Australia appears to be connected to New Guinea. Allegorical figures fill the corners and cusps between the spheres, with Apollo and his chariot at top.

The map of the Americas also features California as an island with a coastline of Terra Esonis stretching toward Asia. In South America the mythical Lake Parime dominates the region of Guiana. The cartouche features an Amazonian queen and traders buying sugar cane and gold.

Full original calf boards with raised, gilt-stamped spine. 82 pp, preface, title, frontispiece, table, 43 maps. List calls for only 41 maps, but this issue has two additional also by Peeters.

Condition: A

The condition code is for the maps which have crisp, dark impressions on bright sheets with minor marginal soiling, light toning along the edges of the sheets, and occasional damp stains confined to the blank margins. A few maps have very light soiling in the image and four maps have short separations in bottom centerfold. Lutzenburgi has a fold separation plus a short clean tear from fold into map. About the last half of the pages have a small marginal worm track, not affecting the maps or text except on two pages just touching a letter. There are occasional light foxing spots, mostly to text pages. The covers are worn with soiling and bumped corners; back cover is worse with abrading leading to several holes through calf and some loss along edges. Signatures are tight. The spine has a few small cracks and the raised bands are well worn. There are lengthy old manuscript notations in beautiful calligraphy on the front and back pastedowns as well as the front free-endpaper, including a poem dedicated to mapmaker Delisle and a listing of the number of feet per mile in different countries. There is an additional handwritten Latin poem opposite page 20.
