Victor Levasseur's "Atlas National Illustre" and "Atlas Universel Illustre" are among the last decorative atlases published. The maps are all lavishly illustrated with scenes of the countryside, products and activities indigenous to the region.

A. Oceanie, by Victor Levasseur, from Atlas Universel Illustre, circa 1845 (16.2 x 10.9"). This map covers the entire South Pacific including Australia, New Zealand, and Southeast Asia. The map is surrounded by beautifully rendered steel-engraved scenes that feature the natives of the region, portraits of French explorers, a harbor vignette, along with French text describing the region. Reference: Tooley (Australia) #858. Condition: A crisp impression with contemporary outline color and light scattered foxing.

B. Australie, by Otto Petri, circa 1873 (10.2 x 8.2"). This handsome Dutch map divides Australia into seven territories: West-Australie; Noord Australie or Alexander Land; Zuid-Australie; Queensland; Nieuw-Zuid Walis; Victoria; and Tasmania of Van Diemens Land. There are plenty of place names, especially along the coasts, and nice topographical detail. The map extends to show all of New Zealand and some of the Indonesian and Melanesian islands. Published in Rotterdam. Engraved by D. Heyse. Condition: On a lightly toned sheet with an area of soiling at top and light scattered foxing. There are centerfold separations in the top and bottom blank margins.
