This matching pair of finely engraved globe gore sheets were originally engraved for one of Coronelli's larger globes. The western sheet covers parts of Ukraine and eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and the Middle East, with an interesting oval-shaped Caspian Sea, oriented east-west just as the Black Sea. The eastern sheet focuses on Central and Southern Asia, extending into western China, with the mythical Chimay Lacus (here Kiam L.) prominently depicted with five rivers flowing south. The images are finely engraved and filled with detail typical of Coronelli's great globes. Place names, political boundaries, rivers, and mountains are depicted throughout. Coronelli was a Venetian monk well known for his beautifully engraved maps and atlases, but his globes are the most magnificent examples of his work.
