"'T Fort Tacaray", Dapper, Olivier

This finely engraved coastal view shows Fort Tacaray (also known as Fort Witsen), near Sekondi-Takoradi in present-day Ghana. Various European nations established forts along the Gold Coast of Africa to control trade in gold, ivory, and slaves. These forts were the site of continual conflict among both Europeans and competing African kingdoms. This view was likely published a few years after the fort was established in 1665. The original fort only stood for a few years before it was destroyed and the site abandoned.
