A well-executed map depicting the northern end of Sumatra that was issued near the end of the Aceh War (1873-1904). It shows excellent detail of the island's physical geography including forests, wetlands, and swamps along with fine contour lines indicating elevation. The map also depicts the substantial infrastructure that had developed in the region including roads, railroads and military posts. Includes an inset of the far northern tip of the island on the same scale as well as a broader topographical map of the region at lower right. Compiled by Lodewijk Thomson, a lieutenant in the Dutch colonial forces who was stationed in Sumatra from 1894-96. Dissected and backed with linen. Folds into a brown cloth slipcase (8.5 x 10") with manuscript paper title label.
