This is the western sheet of this historical two-sheet map illustrating the Roman Empire in the year 400 AD. The map covers all of western Europe and a large portion of northern Africa. It is flanked at top left by an inset showing the Western Hemisphere with no northwestern border. There are extensive notations throughout the map, including one indicates that a gold coin stamped with the effigy of Augustus Caesar was found in an American gold mine, confirming the probability that the Roman Empire penetrated as far as the New World.
