This uncommon and striking engraving depicts the city of Shamakhi in present-day Azerbaijan. Locals bustle in the foreground with camels, carts, and livestock. There is nice detail of the city's architecture and layout. The city is set against a hilly backdrop, with the ruins of an old fortress in the distance. In 1667, just six years before this view's publication, the city was decimated by a massive earthquake that killed 80,000 and wrecked one-third of the city. However, Ogilby's text makes no mention of this earthquake, and the view is primarily based on sources predating the disaster.
