This uncommon plan depicts the city of Mantua, Italy. The city is surrounded on three sides by man-made lakes constructed in the 12th century to make the city easier to defend. There is excellent detail of the city's fortifications, and a key in the bottom right corner identifies various buildings and defenses. The title cartouche references the 1630 siege of Mantua by 36,000 Landsknecht mercenaries during the War of Mantuan Succession (1628-31), part of the larger Thirty Years' War. A compass rose orients the north to the top left.
