This striking view of Astrakhan from the Volga River was published in Cornelis de Bruyn's Reizen over Moskovie, door Persie en Indie..., a chronicle of the Dutch artist's travels through Moscow, Persia, and the East Indies. He left Moscow in April 1703 with a crew of Armenian merchants, traveling down the Moscow, Oka, and Volga rivers until he reached Astrakhan. His depiction of the city's skyline is distinguished by the stunning towers of its cathedrals. Several ships fill the Volga.
