This intricately engraved battle plan chronicles the Battle of Saragossa (or Zaragoza) during the War of Spanish Succession. After the loss at Almenar, Philip V and 20,000 Spanish-Bourbon troops fled to Zaragoza, arriving on August 9, 1710. Days of skirmishes followed with the Spanish-Bourbon troops under the command of the Marquis de Bay pitted against an alliance of Spanish-Habsburg, Dutch, German, Austrian, Portuguese, and British troops under the command of Guido Starhemberg, Lord James Stanhope, and the Count of Atalaya. Finally, on August 20, the full battle broke out. Between 5,000 and 6,000 Spanish-Bourbon troops were killed, and another 7,000 captured. The Allied forces took advantage of this decisive victory and headed to take Madrid, which was essentially deserted when they arrived. The plan shows the troops positions, with a decorative cartouche in the top right corner identifying the order of battle. Zaragoza is illustrated as a miniature bird's-eye view. Engraved by James Basire.
