This is a rare Spanish chart was published in Madrid by Don Tomas Lopez de Vargas Machuca (1730-1802), Geographer to the King of Spain and one of the most distinguished Spanish cartographers of the eighteenth century. The chart depicts the entrance to the largest barrier-lagoon in South America, the Lagoa dos Patos, which is located just south of Porto Alegre in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The chart is filled with depth soundings and navigational notes. Several forts, batteries, roads and buildings are noted along the coastline. A large compass orients north to the right.

A nice impression on paper with an "RRVM" watermark and a couple of tiny tears along the edges of the sheet that have been archivally repaired.
