This map depicts Jacob Roggeveen's voyage in 1721-22 in search of Terra Australis, and was published in his book, Tweejaarige Reyze Rondom de Wereld. His expedition, which was sponsored by the Dutch West India Company, consisted of three ships and began in the Netherlands and then headed south to the Falkland Islands. After passing through the Strait of Magellan, one ship sailed further south in search of the great southern continent, while the other two ships continued along the coast of Chile, until rendezvousing on Juan Fernandez Island. The expedition then headed west, discovering Easter Island (Paasschen Eil), two islands in the Society Islands, and four islands in Samoa. The journey ended in Batavia, Java. In addition to showing Roggeveen's route, this map is interesting for several geographic misconceptions. California is depicted as an island and a huge conjectural Compagnies Land fills the north Pacific between Asia and the Americas. A partially delineated coastline east of Australia is labeled 'T Land van Quiri and 'T Land van den H. Geest. An interesting and uncommon map.
