This large-scale map shows land ownership in McMullen County during the county's first oil boom. Parcels highlighted in yellow indicate oil rights belonging to Sun Oil Company, including a large tract on the western side of the county. The first oil producing well was drilled around 1917 and a pipeline to San Antonio was completed soon after as gas and oil took on a leading role in the county’s economy. Over time the wells became less productive and profitable and the sparsely populated county relied on ranching and farming.

Fast-forwarding to today, with the county's location atop the Eagle Ford Shale, fracking technology has made McMullen the richest county in the United States. For an article on the county’s rise to richest in America, click here

This map appears to be a proprietary copy of the Sun Oil Company. No copies located in OCLC or elsewhere.
