This crisp engraving is considered to be the first depiction of a kangaroo in printed form. It features a large male kangaroo sitting atop a rock outcropping with a beautiful series of hills and mountains in the background. The print was published as plate number 20 (bottom right) in volume 3 of John Hawkesworth's An Account of the Voyages Undertaken by the Order of His Present Majesty for Making Discoveries in the Southern Hemisphere, which includes accounts of the important voyages of Byron, Wallis, Carteret, and most notably Captain Cook who witnessed this kangaroo.
