This bird's-eye plan depicts the Daugavgrivas fortress, in the northwestern tip of Riga on the bank of the Daugava River. Built in the 17th century from the ruins of Daugavgrivas castle, the fortress was captured by Saxons in 1700 during the Great Northern War. By the end of 1701, the Swedes had retaken the fortress. As a note in German text in the left margin states, the fortress was captured by Russians in 1710; it would remain under Russian control until the Latvian War of Independence (1918-1920). At bottom left is an inset showing the Baltic Sea and the area around Riga. The title cartouche depicts clashing armies.
