"Cooperstown, N.Y.", Burleigh

This finely executed stone lithograph of Cooperstown was drawn and published by L.R. Burleigh from Troy, New York. The bird's eye view reveals remarkable detail of individual buildings in the town proper with rolling hills filling the backgroud. A legend identifies 40 points of interest which are keyed to the view. While still a small town, Cooperstown is noteworthy as the home of James Fenimore Cooper and the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Lucien Rinaldo Burleigh (1853-1923) was an artist who operated his own lithography printing press. He specialized in views of small cities, and is known to have drawn around 120 views. Born and raised in Plainfield, Connecticut, Burleigh was well educated with a degree in civil engineering. When he graduated in 1875, the country was still recovering from a depression, and Burleigh was forced to find a way to earn a living outside of the field of civil engineering. He began sketching cities and villages for a Milwaukee lithographing company, and worked for a number of lithographers before opening his own establishment.

Issued folding with light toning and minor foxing. Numerous fold separations have been closed on verso with archival tissue with minor loss at a few fold intersections. Paper wrappers have light wear.
