This detailed bird's-eye plan of Chicago was created by Frederic M. Thrasher to illustrate the nature of gang activity in the city. Gangs with "club rooms" are marked with triangles, while gangs without club rooms are marked with circles. The names of many of these gangs are also identified, along with notations on some of the interrelationships between rival gangs. Concentrations of various ethnic and religious groups are also noted on the map. This map accompanied Thrasher's book, The Gang: A Study of 1,313 Gangs in Chicago, published in 1927, which was the culmination of his three years of research on the sociological and geographical underpinnings of criminal gang activity in Chicago.
