This is a stunning reproduction of Abel Buell's important map published by the New Jersey Historical Society in 1963. The original map was published in 1784, a mere six months after the Treaty of Paris was signed. It was the first large-scale map printed in North America. Spanning four sheets, it depicts the new United States and parts of Canada. Georgia, the Carolinas, Virginia, and Pennsylvania extend to the Mississippi River. Connecticut is shown in an unusual configuration, spanning parts of present-day Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois to touch the Mississippi as well. New York is not named. Part of Louisiana Territory is detailed beyond the Mississippi, and Akansas and Osage land named as well. Extensive notes appear in the west, especially on the top left sheet. In Canada, the Bounds of Hudsons Bay by the Treaty of Utrccht are delineated. A decorative title cartouche dominates the bottom right sheet and features the "Stars and Stripes," appearing on a map for the very first time.

This hand-colored collotype is a facsimile of the beautiful example once owned by the New Jersey Historical Society. Christie's sold that copy in 2010 for $2.1 million.
