A. Cafrerie et Monomotapa, by Pierre Duval, circa 1663, hand color (4.9 x 4.0"). Charming small map of the southern part of Africa fully engraved with mountains, several large rivers, and lakes. The kingdom of Monomotapa covers most of the interior. Decorative title cartouche. An extensive manuscript ink description of "Le Congo" is neatly written on verso. Condition: Stains in blank margins, including a faint stain that just touches platemark at upper right. Bit of minor show though of text on verso.

B. Congo, Cafrerie, by Robert de Vaugondy, from Nouvel Atlas Portatif, dated 1762, black & white (11.3 x 9.5"). First state of this attractive map of the southern part of the continent and Madagascar with an inset of the Horn of Africa (Cote d' Ajan). Without a great amount of detail except the names of numerous tribes. Lake Malawi is shown as an elongated lake named Grand Lac Marari. The title cartouche is surrounded by jungle. Map engraved by E. Dussy and cartouche engraved by Arrivet. Reference: Pedley #439. Condition: On watermarked paper with minor soiling confined to the blank margins.
