"The Cataract in the Danube Call'd Strudel / Cataracta Danuby Strudel Vocata [on sheet with] The Cataract in the Danube Call'd Wurbel / Cataracta Danubij Wurbel Vocata", Cluver, Philipp

These two engravings show cataracts in the Danube River near St. Nikola in northern Austria. The cataracts, or whirlpools, were known as "Strudel" and "Wirbel" and caused many boats to crash and capsize over the centuries.

Cluver's Introductio in Universam Geographicam was a popular atlas, appearing in over 45 editions during a 100-year period. The first edition was published without maps in the 1620s, and the first edition to include maps was published circa 1641. The various editions were published in different cities throughout Europe, including Amsterdam, Nuremberg, and London. This engraving is from a London edition.
