This map was issued in the Dutch edition of Pike's landmark report of the Southwest, describing his expeditions from 1805-1807. His book is one of the most important of all American travel narratives, and stands alongside those of Lewis and Clark as a cornerstone of early western exploration. The report itself (not included) contains accounts of Pike's travels to find the headwaters of the Arkansas and Red Rivers, his explorations along the Mississippi River, and his Spanish escort to Santa Fe, New Mexico and Chihuahua, Mexico.

This long map was drawn by Nicolas King, a friend of Thomas Jefferson and War Department cartographer, who compiled significant maps from both the Pike and Lewis & Clark expeditions. It follows the course of the Mississippi River from the Missouri River to its source and farther north to Lake Winnipeg. Includes numerous notations describing features of the river, locates scores of Indian villages, and shows the winter quarters of Pike, Potier and Dickson. Decorated by a compass rose and fancy titling.
