A. Perou, by Pierre Duval, circa 1661, black & white (4.9 x 4.0"). This charming miniature map covers the region from the Equator to the Tropic of Capricorn. In the upper right corner, in Guaiane, the mythical Lac Parime is shown with the golden city of Manoa. Pierre Duval was Nicolas Sanson's nephew and pupil. He published a wide range of atlases and individual maps including a fine miniature world geography with many of the maps based on Sanson. This particular map appeared in both La Geographie Universelle (1660-61) and Le Monde ou la Geographie Universelle (first published in 1663). Ref: King (2nd ed) pp. 132-135; Pastoureau, Duval XI A #15. Condition: A crisp impression with a couple tiny spots and some binding holes in the left blank margin. (A)

B. Peru, by Bowen & Gibson, from Atlas Minimus or a New Set of Pocket Maps..., circa 1758, hand color (2.6 x 3.8"). This elegant miniature map of Peru includes several place names and locates major rivers. Despite its size, it is a very informative map, featuring illuminating notes on the region, among them, "This Wide Region abounds with Tribes of people who are little known." This is plate 52 (of 52) from Atlas Minimus, considered one of the most attractive miniature atlases of the 18th century. Ref: King (2nd ed) p. 172. Condition: A nice impression with a small spot in the image and light toning that is largely confined to the blank margins. There are binding holes in the left blank margin. (B+)
