This scarce map of St. Croix shows plantations and topography with a symbol to indicate sugarmills (zuckermuhle). The map is titled in a delicately engraved cartouche and oriented with a simple compass rose. It is typically found as a folding sheet in C. G. A. Oldendorp's Geschichte der Mission der Evangelischen Bruder auf den Caraibischen Inseln S. Thomas, S. Croix und S. Jan (History of the Evangelical Brethren on the Caribbean Islands of St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John), one of the first ethnological histories of the Caribbean, published in Germany in 1777. Oldendorp was a Moravian minister who visited the islands to document the progress of the missions located there.
